The Homeys Inspiration

"Growing up in Logan
Heights, I witnessed a community undergoing economic
decline and an increase
in crime and school dropouts. I watched as residents began to feel alienated
and hopeless. I decided that I would
start a true community organization that could turn things around by
involving residents in every level of decision making and execution -
using the untapped power of the people to solve the community's
problems. The organization would serve to provide a 'community career
ladder' by hiring residents to staff programs and providing them with
training and support to succeed at their jobs so they could move up in
the organization or move on to other employment opportunities."

Serving a culturally-diverse group of families living
in Logan Heights and Southeastern San Diego, Homeys collaborates with
local agencies, schools, businesses, and nonprofits to meet the
families' need by:

Preparing preschoolers for a lifetime of learning |

Strengthening the parenting skills of parents |
|
Providing a safe and productive place for youth to
spend time |
|
Helping individuals to reach their goals by giving
them direct access to educational training, and counseling |
|
Fostering community involvement and leadership
through participation in Homeys' activities and management |
