HIPPY Program Description
The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is
a home-based, early intervention parent involvement program designed
to support parents as their child's first and most influential
teacher. Parents with limited formal schooling are provided with
educational materials for their three, four, and five year old
children. After reviewing the activities with the parent educators,
parents spend 15 minutes a day teaching their child school readiness
skills. Support and training for the parent educators, themselves
parents of young children from the communities served by the
program. Today approximately 15,000 educationally disadvantaged
families and 16,000 children participate in 161 programs in 27
states. In California there are 11 programs. In San Diego 180
Children and families are being served.
HIPPY is dedicated to
Increasing the chances of positive early school experiences.
Empowering parents to vie themselves as the primary educators of
their children.
Creating an educational environment in the home which encourages
literacy.
Developing an awareness among parents which will encourage them to
become more involved with and demanding of the educational system.
Providing paraprofessional with job experience and necessary skills
with which to enter the labor market.
Promoting dialogue among various organizations within the community
focused on supporting this preschool effort. |
